The Usual Suspects…
When it comes to pre-mature roof deterioration, there are a few culprits that will join forces to create an unhealthy environment for your roof. GLEOCAPSA MAGMA, MOSS & LICHEN
GLEOCAPSA MAGMA
The black streaks that you see on your asphalt shingles are a type of algae called GLEOCAPSA MAGMA. This black algae feeds off of the embedded limestone causing it the surface to become unprotected. This will then cause the asphalt granules to loosen within each rain fall. This condition will eventually reduces the shingles to reflect the heat causing your roof to overheat… meaning spending more money on heating and cooling costs!
MOSS
Those green clumps on your roof will retain unwanted moisture and act as a party for bacteria, algae & mold to spread throughout your roof. If unchecked, the moss will start to grow in between the shingles causing separation that leads to rot deterioration and leaks!
LICHEN
Lichen is a symbiotic organism that is a combination of algae and fungus and usually has a light, yellow mint-green color. More than an eye sore, these hybrid species can embed and penetrate its roots deep into the roof material. This combined with moss can damage asphalt shingles loosening its protective granules. In some cases it can lead to separating or even worse cracking the concrete roof tiles.
The Process
We utilize a method called Soft Washing. That means we only use low pressure, the same pressure as that coming out of your garden hose. Our algicide solution that is also bio-degradable! You can be confident your roof will be taken care of in a safe and responsible manner.
- ASSESMENT – Begins with an assessment of the overall condition of your roof. looking for signs of pre-existing damages, moss growth ( green furry stuff ), lichen pigmentations ( greenish white spots ), spread of gleocapsa magma ( black streaks ).
- PROTECTION – We then come down and and take measures to protect the area around your home by covering any security camera’s or other sensitive electronics, wash down the plants and flowers around with water and bag your down spouts to collect any roof solutions that can run down and enter the gutters.

BRUSHING & Gutter Cleaning – Depending on the amount of moss build up on your roof, especially heavy growth, we would manually remove as much as possible (around 75%) with a light brushing. Any hard type scrubbing will cause damage removing the protective granules from the shingles. then we proceed to clear off the debris from your roof, the proceed to clean out your gutters.
- TREATMENT – Algicide solution treatment will be then applied. This is when the magic begins and the cleaning and clearing of the remaining moss buildup will continue to work until the moss is completely dissolved.
